Who Owns TeraBox: Flextech, Dubox and the Baidu Question

TeraBox's background involves a name change and a corporate history that is only partly documented in public, official sources. Here is what we could actually confirm, and where the record runs out.

Who runs TeraBox today

TeraBox is provided by Flextech Inc. Its own Terms of Service state plainly that "your agreement is with Flextech Inc.". Flextech says it was established in June 2020 with headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, and its Terms are governed by Japanese law, with disputes handled in the courts of Tokyo. The developer address listed on Google Play is in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo.

It started under a different name

TeraBox launched in 2020, first under the name Dubox. Traces of that name remain in the product today: the Android package ID is still com.dubox.drive, TeraBox's web servers return the header "X-Powered-By: DuboxServer", and the domain dubox.com redirects to terabox.com. TMTPost, a tech publication, reported in September 2020 that Baidu's subsidiary Popin had rolled out a cloud service named Dubox outside China, describing it as very similar to Baidu's own China-only service, Baidu Wangpan. TechRadar separately describes TeraBox as "previously known as Dubox before it was purchased by FlexTech Inc."

Exactly when the Dubox to TeraBox rename happened is not officially dated. One source gives April 2021, but a Flextech press release from September 2021 already uses the TeraBox name, and Flextech's own material only says the service began in 2020 without a specific rename date. We are not going to give you a precise date, because the sources genuinely disagree.

The Baidu question specifically

This is the part people usually want a straight answer to, and where we have to be honest that one is not fully available. What is confirmed: Dubox was launched in 2020 by Popin, a subsidiary of Baidu. What is not confirmed: whether Baidu retains any ownership or relationship with the service today. No official statement from either Flextech or Baidu addresses the current relationship, and a commonly repeated claim that Baidu sold the business for $385 million appears in no source we consider reputable. We would not repeat that figure as fact.

The most accurate summary we can offer: Dubox was launched in 2020 by Popin, a Baidu subsidiary. The service is now operated by Tokyo-based Flextech Inc. Whether any ownership link between Flextech and Baidu still exists is not something either company has stated publicly.

Where your data is said to be processed

A related question people ask is whether TeraBox data is subject to Chinese law or stored in China, given the Baidu origin. We found no current, reputable source confirming that. TechRadar notes that Dubox, in its earlier form, once stated data was stored in Chinese data centres, but says it was unable to confirm the current situation. TeraBox's present Privacy Policy states data may be stored and processed "in Japan", matching Flextech's Tokyo base. We cannot independently confirm where servers physically sit today, and would treat any confident claim either way, including this one beyond what the policy states, with caution.
