Is TeraBox Safe? What the Company Says and What Reviewers Found

"Is TeraBox safe" has two different answers depending on what you mean: safe from losing your files by accident, and safe in the sense that nobody else can see what is in them. They are worth separating.

What TeraBox itself claims

TeraBox's privacy policy lists security measures including two-factor authentication and encryption of files at rest. Flextech, the company behind TeraBox, also states TeraBox holds ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 27701 and ISO/IEC 27018 certifications, though we did not independently verify the certificates themselves. TeraBox's terms say it may review conduct and content, while separately stating that this does not mean it does review content, and its privacy policy describes using automated technology to detect abusive behavior.

Where the claims get inconsistent

This is the part worth being clear-eyed about. Flextech's own material variously describes TeraBox as "end-to-end encrypted", "encrypted at the client-side with zero knowledge", and separately says all stored files are "user-encrypted". At the same time, the Terms ask for permission to "host, store, copy, access, display, reproduce, back up, scan" user data, and the privacy policy describes automated content detection. Independent reviewers at Cloudwards and TechRadar both looked for zero-knowledge (client-side) encryption and found none. Cloudwards states plainly that the service "lacks client-side or zero-knowledge encryption", meaning that in theory, the company could access stored files.

The honest summary: TeraBox says files are encrypted in storage and in transit. Independent reviewers found no zero-knowledge encryption, which means the provider could technically access files. We would not describe TeraBox as end-to-end encrypted as a plain fact, because the company's own claims on this point do not agree with each other, and reviewers found no evidence of the strongest version of that claim.

Independent review scores

Cloudwards, in a review last updated in September 2026, scored TeraBox's security at 40 percent ("Terrible") and privacy at 50 percent ("Poor"), while scoring its pricing at 95 percent ("Excellent") and speed at 85 percent ("Very Good"). Their overall verdict was that TeraBox is "probably safe" for general use, but they specifically advise against using it for confidential data. TechRadar's advice is similar in spirit: avoid storing sensitive or personal information there, or encrypt files yourself before uploading if you must.

What TeraBox does confirm about takedowns

TeraBox publishes a quarterly transparency report. Its most recent edition we reviewed (Q2 2025) reported removing 309,674 links distributing prohibited content and terminating 1,456 accounts in that quarter alone, with copyright infringement, CSAM and violent extremism named as the leading categories of objections received. This is a genuine, published moderation record, not a marketing claim, and it is worth knowing both because it shows the platform does act on reports, and because it is one honest reason a link you were sent can stop working with no warning.

What this means practically

• For ordinary sharing, most people's day-to-day use, TeraBox's own record and independent reviews do not point to a specific active threat.
• For anything sensitive, financial documents, personal identification, private photos you would not want anyone else to see, both TeraBox's own Terms (which permit scanning) and every independent review we found agree: do not rely on TeraBox alone, and consider encrypting the file yourself first.
• Nothing in any source we reviewed suggests TeraBox is on a piracy watchlist or is unsafe to simply open a video from, which is the specific use case iTeraPlay is built for.
